In praise of buying used

Several weeks ago, I had to buy tires for Wild Bill, my old F150. As is the norm, things did not go as smoothly as I had hoped.

I bought a set of tires and rims only to discover that they didn’t fit!

So, I had to buy 3 more tires.

I finally got around to putting the tires and rims on Craig’s List at 1:30 this afternoon. I just sold them about 30 minutes ago and made a $25 profit!

So, the final accounting is three tires with less than 10,000 miles on them mounted and balanced for $91. Not too bad!

Stopped at the gate by Barney Fife

It seems that every so often I just get the itch to drive to places that are far away!

I usually have a pretty good reason…

I drove to Texas to look at a car for my son

I drove to Agency, MO to buy tires for my old truck

Today, I drove three hours to look at an oil refinery and a fertilizer plant! I am not kidding!

A few weeks ago, I did something that I haven’t done in several months…

I looked at our stocks. I haven’t done that because it has been so discouraging!

However, this time I saw that we have two stocks that have doubled since we purchased them! And they are just starting to grow!

One of those two companies is in Kansas…about three hours away. I wanted to see it!

Everyone else in my family was working so, I hopped in the car and took off…

I don’t know what I was thinking…

When I pulled up to the gate and asked if I could get an informal tour of the place, the rent-a-cop grew suspicious and asked to see my driver’s license!

He reminded me a little of Barney Fife!

Anyway, it is a beautiful sight to see a company that I am part owner of cranking out production! And the drive was really enjoyable.

I want my money back

We got my son’s SAT scores today…

If you remember, we actually paid a tutor to help him. I think we paid for 4 lessons…$240!

I want my money back!

His scores only improved by twenty points!

That was about 40 less than I was hoping for…

I don’t know if he did well enough to persuade Drexel to give him more academic money…

This is one of the difficult parts of being a parent…having to sit on the sideline and watch as your child launches out on their own. If they are doing great, it is fun to watch. However, if they are struggling, it feels like you are left twisting in the wind.

Say when!

I finally got through to the Drexel coach today to talk about the campus visit…

Big A is going to be attending classes with members of the wrestling team…

He will meet with the admissions and financial departments.

When I asked him if Big A should bring his wrestling gear, he responded instantly “Oh, absolutely!”

Now…

Why do you suppose that he was so enthusiastic in his answer?…

Hmmmm?…

Maybe he wants to see if my son is really that good!

My answer to that question is “I’m your huckleberry!…Say when!

But, I’m not going to be wrestling either…

When I brought up my desire for a roommate with strong morals for my son, the coach erupted…”I think I’ve got just the guy. There’s a guy coming who has two goals. His first is that he wants to win a national championship. (same goal as Big A) His second is to go through college without drinking a beer!”

When I told my son about this, he just smiled and laughed.

Stay tuned…

Not then…not then…hmmmm

I have to be careful…

I could easily rupture one of my knee ligaments…

from kicking myself in the rear!!!

Less than one year ago, I earned a voucher for a free flight with United Airlines. Both my wife and I have looked EVERYWHERE for the past three weeks and haven’t been able to find it…%&^$&$*(!!!

Time is running out. Even if I did find it, I have to notify United 21 days before actually flying.

So, do the math…Today is the 19th. 20+21=41

Even if I found the voucher tonight (which isn’t going to happen), the earliest that my son could fly to visit Drexel is May 41st on the Ernest P. Worrell calendar. (That would also be June 10th for those more comfortable with the Gregorian version)

The problem with that date is that it is during Drexel’s Finals week. Everybody knows that you don’t get a good feel for a school during final exams!

So, I had to buy a ticket from Southwest…

and that wasn’t easy! This coming weekend is out. Too much money!

He can’t fly out on the last weekend in May. He has a warm up tournament and we are moving into our new apartment.

The ticket prices drop after June 1st. However, he has the state freestyle tournament on Saturday, June 6th. He has to do well there to qualify for the Nationals in July.

Now, he can’t be jet-lagged for that so that rules out flying back on Friday…

And he has Elite night practice on Monday where only the best wrestlers are invited, so…

He is flying out on Tuesday morning, landing in Philadelphia at 7:35 P.M., taking his official visit on Wednesday and flying back to KC to be at practice on Thursday night!

And he’s on summer vacation!

Already??? But I just got situated

I spent the evening packing up boxes and boxes of books that I don’t think I am realistically going to read in the next year. We have been using the third bedroom as an office/library. With just two bedrooms, that will obviously not be the case for the next year.

As I pulled the books off of the shelf and put them back into boxes, I realized that I just finished unpacking them and getting everything organized less than six months ago!

Downsizing has its downsides!

This should have been a celebration

This is my 500th post on this blog! I just wish it were about a happier topic.

I haven’t written about technology in quite awhile. That’s because I haven’t had any problems in quite awhile.

After my third Cingular 8525 died, I decided to buy the most basic phone I could find. Forget PIM software, Excel spreadsheets, portable Word documents. I just wanted a phone that would still work after being dropped repeatedly.

I went back to a paper Day-Timer. It’s not as if my life is all that complicated right now. Also, my Day-Timer still works if I drop it!

I also enjoyed several months with little to no problems with my MacBook Pro laptop.

That was true until our digital camera executed a quick and very bloody attack on me at our son’s graduation ceremony.

We actually remembered to take the camera this time. I can’t tell you how many times we have arrived at an “important” event and realized that we didn’t bring the camera.

Now, I wish we forgot it one more time.

The ceremony was held at the Kemper Arena. I guess that it seats between 6-12,000 people. Needless to say, we were pretty far away from the action.

Even when completely zoomed in, our son was still just a face in the crowd.

Ah, but I got a “great” idea. They were broadcasting what was happening onstage on the big overhead screens hanging down in the center of the arena ceiling. I thought, I will just take a picture of the screen when my son receives his diploma!

I did a test shot…

Beautiful!

We were sitting next to some friends from the wrestling team. Their son was walking up the stairs to the stage. I wanted to bless them so I took a picture of him walking across the stage. Great!

I then snapped it again when he was receiving his diploma…

and ended up with a picture of the guy behind him!!! The camera too so long to complete the first picture that it completely missed the second! I couldn’t believe it!

My heart sank…I had a great idea to bless them and it didn’t work!

My son’s row moved toward the stage. I snapped a few shots. Everything was working normally again. I decided to try to take two pictures of him on stage. I would just take the first picture earlier.

As soon as he reached the top step, I snapped it. Plenty of time…

I kept looking up at the big screen through the camera…

waiting…

waiting…

waiting!!!

By the time the screen came back up, my son was not even in the picture!!! I not only didn’t get a picture of him receiving his diploma; I completely missed the big moment! After watching who knows how many of his peers receive, I never even saw my own son!

But that wasn’t the end of it. My wife was also upset that I missed it!

Anyway, let’s just say that it made for a very long night and morning.

I think I am going to go back to the old camera. I would have gotten all of the shots that I wanted with that one.

I’m sorry he had to learn this way

My son wrestled in a “private” wrestling tournament on Saturday. By private, I mean that you had to be invited to attend. Otherwise, you would never have known about it. There were no advertisements posted anywhere.

Six club teams wrestled each other. My son’s team finished 3rd.

He won his first match against one of the two powerhouse teams. However, he wrestled the Kansas 4A state champion and got his butt kicked.

I can’t say that I was all that surprised. In fact, I told my wife that he would probably lose.

How  did I know this since I had no idea who he was going to wrestle?

His attitude.

We butted heads a little last night. Then, he went back to sleep this morning after I woke him up.

I thought, “OK, your big man on campus. I’ll let you handle it yourself.”

After all, he is going to be completely on his own in just a few months from now.

He brought no food, water, anything. Consequently, he had no energy.

I made him eat some food and drink some Gatorade after his whuppin’. He recovered nicely and won his last three matches, including beating the guy who beat the guy who beat him.

On the way home, he noticed that I was unusually quiet and asked if there was something I wanted to say. I asked him what his thoughts were of the day’s events and then gave him my perspective. I think we ended up having a profitable conversation.

Yearbook thoughts

I have more thoughts on the yearbook ads…

They don’t quite fit here so I moved them to my blog on our culture.

Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Yearbook thoughts

This is it???

My son brought home his yearbook. I am glad that we just bought the regular book and didn’t get sucked in to all of the extras because I think we overpaid!

Little to nothing about the football team that came with :04 seconds of advancing to the State tournament…

Nothing about the girl who broke school records in swimming and might be an Olympic contender…

Little to nothing about the school’s best wrestling team in a decade. No pictures of the 4 guys who placed at state.

But there are a whole bunch of “cute” little personal stories about what it “felt” like to go to school!

No pages for the “Best…”, “Worst…” and “Most Likely to …”

In fact, I discovered that our son won a very prestigious “Most…” award only because a young lady congratulated him for it when she signed his yearbook…

Most Innocent!

And then there are the ads…

There are 379 members in my son’s Senior class. 239 parents bought 136 pages of personal ads for their kids at $300 per page! (1/4 page for $75, 1/2 page for $150 and a full page for $300.) If my math is anywhere close to correct, that is around $40,000 to put baby pictures and write a little blurb to your children!

Needless to say, we weren’t one of them.
