Starting over again

I resumed my jogging routine today. I didn’t even make 3 miles…

I had stopped running because I was a little weak during the fast.

This is the third time that I have started to “get back in shape.” I had a two month interruption when I was selling the house and moving.

I don’t know if it is age, but every time it seems like I have lost so much ground that I am starting over. I know that is not true. When I started in January, I only ran 1 mile and I didn’t really run that. I jogged.

Anyway, back to the grind.

My little disciple

My youngest daughter has taken the plunge. She is going to use her first daily planner.

We found a pretty pink cover at Office Depot in the Bargain Bin for $8!

She will be using “week-at-a-glance” pages that I designed and printed up.

We discovered that both Staples and Office Depot ONLY “month-at-a-glance” pages for 2009. You would think that they would have a mid-year version with all of the back-to-school materials they are promoting. We wound up stumbling upon an 18 month (June 2008 through Dec. 2009) set by Franklin-Covey at Target.

She then wanted a small Bible that would fit inside her planner cover. The Bible bookstore that we went to just happened to be having a sale on Bibles today! She saved 33%!

She is very excited.

I am very excited for her!

Is this the beginning of something big?

My son has been posting a flyer that advertises his handyman services on the public bulletin boards at several of the local supermarkets.

He has received a few calls and done some very light work…

UNTIL NOW!

A homeowner was walking in his attic when he slipped and put his foot through the ceiling. He saw my son’s flyer and hired him to repair it.

This is not hanging a picture, or moving some furniture.

He had to cut the drywall, cut and nail a new 2X4 frame in place, put up a new piece of drywall and then mud and tape it!

He just finished and the customer is thrilled at his work. He even asked for his business card. We are going to have to make some up right quick!

Those pictures are where?!?!

Yesterday morning, my wife convinced me to let her take a couple of pictures with my son since I am thinner than she has EVER seen me. The last time I was at this weight, I was 18 years old. I met her when I was 21.

So, I took of my shirt, dusted off a few muscle poses from my teenage years and let her snap a few shots.

Last night, I noticed that my son was cropping the photographs. I had no problem with that. He looks REALLY good.

This morning, I asked him what he was doing. He posted them to his page in Facebook. After a few more questions, I discovered that he posted the entire picture on his Facebook site! Me, a 48 year old man with my shirt off, flexing his “muscles”! Posted on the Internet!!!

I told them to take it off.

“Why? You look good!”

“Get me off of there!”

“But, Da-a-a-ad…”

“Dude, if I’m not off there in fifteen minutes, you won’t be able to use the computer for a month!”

“Dad!”

“Now you have fourteen minutes.”

He took them off.

Happiness is a good mechanic!

When I left my wife in Kansas City last August, perhaps it was unfair, but I told her that one of the first things that she needed to do was to find a good mechanic.

Well, one year later, I think I have finally found one.

In my book, a good mechanic is honest (he doesn’t tell you that you need work that you really don’t), charges fair prices and is competent at what they do. After being generally disappointed in my short time in Kansas City, I think I have found two.

Tim Read, proprietor of V&P Racing has been a great help to me. He usually creates high performance vehicles for high end clients. Yet, he was willing to fix my old F-150, stood behind his work and his prices were very reasonable.

The second one is Chris at Klassen Automotive. I took my nice truck in because the brakes were starting to ‘shimmy’. Long story short, he fixed a potentially very expensive leak in my rear axle and told me that I could safely delay fixing the brakes for another 5-10,000 miles. All told, I spent less than $40!

All that is left is to find work and a permanent place to live…LOL!

There is more than one way to plan!

We had to visit the doctor because my son picked up a skin infection from his last wrestling tournament.

While I was waiting for the prescription to be filled at our local CVS, my youngest daughter wandered off.

About 5 minutes later, she came and sat next to me with a sheepish look. I asked her what was wrong.

“Well, I went to look for a daily planner (she has become interested in setting goals and managing her time) so I went to the Family Planning section…”

I immediately started laughing!

She continue, “I saw all of this stuff and though WRONG SECTION!”

They don’t make movies in Hollywood that are any funnier or precious than that!

She’s gone…again

My wife left me today…

to go to the Southwest Believer’s Convention in Fort Worth, Texas.

When we lived in Anaheim, she would attend the West Coast Believer’s Convention in Anaheim and just spend the week with her parents. But, this is a new season!

Since we gave our economy car away to my second daughter, she had to rent a Chevy Cobalt from Avis.

I am glad she is going. It recharges her spiritual battery like nothing else.

But, you know…

she did just get back from a week long trip to California a little over a week ago…

Do you think that she is telling me something?

I thought that was the place

I just got off the phone with my second daughter. She has just been hired for a full-time position by the Macaroni Grille in Cool Springs, TN. When I took her around to apply for jobs, this was the place that I wanted her to work.

The young eagle takes its first flight out

While I was remodeling our house in California, my son was watching. In the last year before he moved, he became very helpful. In fact, we built the garage together!

My son is starting to work for himself. Well, now he is starting to work for himself. He made up a flyer and posted it at several of the local grocery stores and has started getting quite a few calls.

I can’t tell you how precious it is to drop him off at the place and watch him meet the person who hired him! He is a little nervous, etc. I am watching a young man grow up before my very eyes. And it reminds me that I went through the same process many years ago while attending UCLA.

I really don’t like this part

I started seriously looking for a job today. I went on all of the usual job sites (Hot Jobs, Monster, CareerBuilder) and applied to whatever I thought might fit. I then searched for recruiters because I truthfully didn’t find that many jobs that fit my skills.

I really don’t like looking for a job. I have never been good at it. I have likened it to “finding” a wife. How exactly do you do that?

In the past, I have applied for jobs that I was clearly qualified for and received absolutely no response. I have performed well in interviews and then received the bad news that they chose to go with someone else. Then, when my house was in escrow and I was about to leave California, I received three job offers near my home!

Where were they when I wanted to make a move?

Anyway, the whole process remains pretty much a mystery to me. And therefore, it is not an activity that generally causes me to swell with confidence. In fact, I find it very discouraging.

My cover letter and resumé were written by a professional. While everything on my resumé is entirely truthful, it is hard to remember the details of my past achievements. However, the circumstances surround being laid off are still VERY vivid!

One of the recruiters sent me an information form to fill out. I had to give them both “business” and “peer” references. However, it has been over three years since I have updated my references.

While that should have been simple, the company that I worked for has undergone so much turmoil in the past few years that I really had to search my memory to come up with a current list. In fact, it made me realize how much change I have lived through.

I decided to call each person to ask them if they would be willing to vouch for my character and my past performance before I put them down on the form. One by one, I added them until I ended up with a fairly impressive list. And, in the process of our conversations, I began to remember that I was/am a VERY good employee!

It is amazing what happens when you just jump in and start tackling a problem.
