I have won the battle!

I am about to send out e-mails to announce this blog to the world. This is the culmination of roughly two months work and uncounted years of planning and dreaming.

In the last two months, I have come to know on a very personal level the tremendous resistance we face when we venture out to do anything creative or out of the norm.

For me, the fiercest battle has been with my own emotions. Through much of the time, the conversation inside has gone something like this:

“Isn’t this a little self-indulgent? Shouldn’t you be looking for a job instead of wasting all of this time ‘playing’? How are you going to make any money with that? How do you know if anyone will read it? What makes you think that anyone is interested in reading about your family?”

Well, I have made it through! And I am writing not one, but two blogs with a third one in the works.

“What will come of it?” I don’t know. I am just going to plant the seed, water it regularly and see what it becomes!

“Will I ever make any money at it?” I don’t know. I hope so! If it does, then I will have the time to read and study and write even more. But that is not why I am writing. I am writing this blog because I enjoy telling stories, especially all of the details that make life so interesting.

“How do you know if anyone will read it?” I don’t. That is the challenge of it all. Can I create something that people will enjoy reading? If no one does, I know that it has already changed me.

“Shouldn’t you be looking for a job instead of wasting all of this time ‘playing’?” No. I have taken a few months to get settled in my new land. Starting this blog has been a VERY good use of my time.

My next venture is to either start or buy a business. Just like I didn’t know how to start a blog, I don’t know how to do that either. But I will figure it out and I will tell the whole world about the process.

Who knows? Perhaps I will inspire others to do the same!

Nature is conspiring against me…

My wife and children woke up at 9:00 this morning. My wife started to make breakfast so I went out on the balcony to see if it was still as hot and humid as it was 3 1/2 hours ago.

The temperature had dropped about 5-10º, the humidity had dropped and a beautiful breeze was blowing!

My youngest daughter piped up, “See, Dad, God visits us at 9:00 because that is the cool of the day here!”

The three of them evidently got a bigger kick out of that comment than I did!

“Lord, your making it difficult to sell this getting up early stuff…”

The cool of the day???

Life is so funny. Last night my body was itching to run. My legs felt alive for the first time in many years. So, I went to sleep anticipating this morning’s run.

Forget the trend…

It was one of those “Get out of bed…put your clothes on…and your shoes…open the door…start running…no, you’re not going to guit. You are going to finish” runs.

I did  actually run at 5:30 this morning. However, I started to miss Northridge. In the San Fernando Valley, even though the temperature will rise to between 90-100º, it is usually (except in heat waves) be in the low 60’s early in the morning.

Not here! It was 80 something and humid!

However, I did see more rabbits (5) that usual (1)!

A 40 day fast!!!

This morning at church, our new pastor announced that God was calling the community to a 40 DAY FAST beginning on June 30th!

I guess I should file this under “We asked for it and we got it.”

I have to mentally gear up for this. I started by taking my family to IHOP (the restaurant) for a good breakfast after the service!

A sweet father daughter reunion!

My second daughter called me to inform me that she will be moving to Nashville! We are excited about that because there is a strong spiritual community there with many young people actively serving God.

Her goal is to be there by the end of the year. As we talked, I asked her why she thought she should wait until the end of the year. In my opinion, if you feel that God wants you to move to a certain location and He hasn’t told you to wait, you should do everything that you can to make that happen.

While she said many things, in the end she wanted to try to fix up some of the things that she had messed up. In short, she wanted to save her dignity.

I told her that as an objective (well…somewhat) bystander, she could fix all of those things in Nashville and probably do it faster. If God wants you to live in Nashville, staying in Detroit will not make things better.

The fact is that anyone who truly cares about her could care less about what she has messed up in the past. They, we, I just want to see her restored.

“So, you have a mess to clean up. Fine. Let’s clean it up together. We’ll get it done faster that way.”

I was careful to always leave the decision in her hands. I was just a friend giving her my perspective.

At the end of the call, she was sobbing.

I thanked God for the opportunity to be her father again! I wonder what she will decide…

What’s the word I am looking for?

On our way to church, I found myself in the middle of an unscheduled ESL class. English was proving to be difficult a difficult language this morning.

My son and youngest daughter had gone to see some friends perform “My Fair Lady” last night. They then went to the cast party and did not get home until the wee hours of the morning.

My daughter was raving about the guy who played Eliza Doolittle’s father: “He was great! He was totally uninhabited!”…

It is amazing how much one little letter changes the meaning of all of the letters around it! It is amazing how much laughter that one little letter can generate!

Seeing that I was having great difficulty recovering, my wife gently corrected her, “You mean uninhibited, honey. Uninhabited means that no one is living there.”

My daughter winced…

My wife asked what part another cast member that we know played.

My son piped up, “He was the beertender.”…

More laughter…

Again my wife came to the rescue. “You mean he was the bartender?”

He winced.

I guess we will all be taking naps this afternoon.

What’s in the water?

I am beginning to wonder if God has spiked the water in our apartment.

My son and youngest daughter are watching some friends perform “My Fair Lady.” So, my wife and I each stretched out on a couch. I however had to clean up my couch before I lay down on it. This is standard protocol in our family. I wish it wasn’t, but it is.

As I cleared the last item off of the couch, it dawned on me that the item in my hands was Webster’s 3rd Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language.

What’s the big deal about that, you might ask…

Well, my wife was at work until I picked her up and brought her home…

and I know that I didn’t get it out…

That means that one of my two children actually GOT OUT THE DICTIONARY to LOOK UP A WORD that they DID NOT KNOW without first repeatedly trying to extract the definition from me!

I could get accustomed to this if it keeps happening!

He tricked me

My son took his new super duper VERY expensive skateboard when we went to the park. He tried to get me on it but I politely refused. Instead, I watched him send the board rolling in front of him, break into an all out sprint, jump on the board and then cruise effortlessly along.

When he asked me a second time to ride it, I caved in and agreed. I wanted to be a good sport, you know the fun dad that kids love. I mean, I’m too young to fully embrace my eventual destiny as an old fuddy duddy.

And, after all, he made it look SO easy!

And it was fun…for awhile.

But, I had had enough fun for one day so I decided to ride the board back toward him. My plan was to turn, stop, get off and give the board back to him. I started my sharp turn to stop but as I tried to lift my rear foot, I discovered that it had become completely attached to the board. I COULDN’T MOVE IT!

My brain became so preoccupied with my inability to get my foot off of the board and onto the ground that I failed to notice that I was falling! However, that small oversight was quickly brought to my attention when I slammed onto the bike path at my son’s feet. When I say slammed, I mean SLAMMED! I did nothing to break my fall! And it hurt!

It must have looked funny because all he did was laugh!

After I got over the initial pain, I wondered why I ever agreed to such a stupid thing! I mean, I was never good at that sort of thing when I was young and in my prime. What the heck was I thinking? I am approaching 50.

That’s it, I’m done with this!

That is what I told my wife when I took her to work and informed her of the fruit of my day’s labor! However, after I dropped her off, I got an idea!

I came home and tried it…

Same problems…

Then I got another idea…

and you will never guess what happened…

AppleWorks WORKED! I DON’T HAVE TO CONVERT ANY FILES!!!
I then thought…

since it worked on the “Tiger” partition, perhaps, just perhaps, the same fix might cause AppleWorks to work on “Leopard”…

AND IT DID!!!! Everything works beautifully! I have a new computer! Not a new computer that I have made to look like my old one. A NEW COMPUTER!

So, 4 trips to the Apple store to meet with 4 different “Genius’s” and 4 calls to Apple with 6 different support staff helping me and I am the guy who fixed the problem! Go figure!

Much ado about nothing

I showed up early for my appointment at the Apple store. The “Tiger” installation went smoothly while my wife and I walked and talked at the Country Club Plaza. I thought, “This is great. I am close.”

I came home and spent the next 5 hours p-a-i-n-s-t-a-k-i-n-g-l-y transferring each of my files, etc. from my old laptop to the “Tiger” partition. And when I finished, I discovered…

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS.

I checked and rechecked. Everything is set up exactly like my old laptop with “Tiger” on it! And everything works fine on that computer!

I am right back where I was yesterday except that I have WASTED ANOTHER DAY trying to ENJOY my NEW COMPUTER!
