Together again!

I finally finished receiving my beating and pulled up in front of our friend’s house to pick up our youngest daughter. However, before I could do that, I received an unexpected surprise…

My second daughter came out to greet me! There was a light in her eyes. She was really glad to see us. God has really touched her!

That is when it became real: this is the first time that my entire family will be together in more than a year! My oldest daughter is the maid of honor and flew in from Dallas. What a blessed weekend!

Beaten with Old Hickory

As we arrived in Nashville, we called the parents of the bride to get directions to their place so we could pick up our youngest daughter.

“Get off at Old Hickory, turn left. When the road dead ends, make a right…”

We got off the freeway at the Old Hickory exit and turned left. After 10 minutes, I called her back. “You did say to turn left, correct?”

“Yes, that’s correct.”

We drove another 25 minutes, but the road never dead ended!

Let me just say that I did not do the planning on this trip. If you will remember, I was figuring out how to get out of New Mexico last week.

I went into a bar and asked the manager how to get to Brentwood.

“You’ve got to go 30-40 minutes back the way you came!”

I then relayed the directions that we were given.

“Old Hickory goes all the way around the city. You’re on the opposite end of town.”

We drove back to the original freeway and resumed heading south. We found another exit named Old Hickory. Then, we saw another one!

Who planned this city?

We finally exited the freeway and within 1/4 mile, a sign said that Old Hickory made a 90 degree turn.

It turns out that Old Hickory is this little two lane country road that winds around the city. But, that is too simplistic a description. It seems to me that Old Hickory must have been laid out during the Civil War to confuse the ‘logical’ Yankees and thus slow down their progress.

I say that because when you drive on Old Hickory, you eventually learn that whenever another road joins Old Hickory, the road that continues straight forward is a different street. Old Hickory is the name on the sign that makes the 90 degree turn or the slight veer that you DON’T take so that you can ‘stay’ on Old Hickory and find your friend’s house and pick up your daughter!

And if you do happen to make the right turn to stay on Old Hickory, because your friend’s wife told you to take Old Hickory until it ‘dead ends, you later realize that you should have continued straight on the road with a different name!

Old Hickory reduces you to stopping and looking for street signs at every junction or intersection and doing that at night is a pretty slow process!

How did the South lose?

We drove on Old Hickory as it twisted and turned through some very wooded areas for ANOTHER 30 minutes.

I stopped and knocked on someone’s front door to ask for help. A young girl answered the door and said that she had no idea how to help us. She was just visiting her aunt.

OF COURSE!

My daughter called, “Dad, I’m not trying to pressure you, but…”

I didn’t even try to pretend that I was calm, cool and collected…

“We are lost! I have no idea when we will get there!”

I looked at a road atlas (which IS NOT detailed) and determined that I should keep driving the way I was going. My wife did not hold that same opinion.

At this point, the severe storm that we encountered in St. Louis made its way into the cab of our truck. Both lightning and thunder were heard in our truck. My son weathered the storm pretty well.

Finally, 2 1/2 hours after we were “JUST A FEW MINUTES AWAY”, we pulled up to our friend’s house!

Welcome to Nashville!

Honey, we’re just in time!

We climbed into the truck and began out trek to Nashville to attend a wedding this weekend. Both the bride and the groom are from families that we have known and loved for more than 25 years. In fact, my wife and I are invited to the rehearsal brunch on Saturday! What an unexpected treat!

However, 45 minutes into the drive, we discovered that we forgot the bridesmaid’s dress. So, before we even got started real good, we were over an hour behind schedule!

I can’t tell you how that thrilled me! Another great opportunity to demonstrate my maturity as a husband!

Perhaps I should have expected this, but that ‘little’ delay put us into St. Louis just in time to drive through the heart of a storm generating the latest tornado warning!

Huge lightning bolts right off the freeway! Hydroplaning! So much rain falling that driving 45 MPH was dangerous! In some areas, the water was OVER TWO FEET DEEP…ON THE FREEWAY!

Perhaps we are secretly addicted to excitement…you know, “Hey, hon, since there is nothing happening in KC today, let’s see if we can catch that tornado in St. Louis this afternoon.”

I’m writing this so you know we made it through.

Welcome to AT&T

After dropping off my son at wrestling practice, I went to Starbucks to drink coffee and work on my blog. As soon as tried to publish a post, a window popped up to log into AT&T’s wifi.

I thought, “You know, I need to go through the hassle of getting my password, etc. enabled so that I can start using it. After all, this WAS one of the reasons I chose AT&T over Time-Warner.”

After navigating through their VERY IRRITATING automated answering service for three to four minutes, I finally I got to the WI-FI department! And this is what I heard…

“I’m sorry. Our offices are closed. Please call during normal business hours!!!”

^&%*($$#!  Could they not tell me that in the beginning?

I just wanted to…

All I wanted to do was get an ice chest out of the storage facility. That is all that I wanted to do.

As I did, I noticed that two small boxes were wet! Hmmm, that’s funny. I don’t have anything liquid in storage…

The roof is leaking!

I told the facility manager…

I spent the next 3 1/2 hours moving half of our stuff into a second storage room!

Do I look that stupid?

After dropping my wife off at Costco, I headed to the storage facility to get a cooler to carry food in for our drive to Nashville, TN tomorrow.

On the way, I thought that it would be good to get the alignment done on the truck so I stopped at the National Tire & Battery on the way to the storage facility. They said it would be $99 for a one year warranty and would take about 45 minutes. “That’s great!”

I walked to Subway so that I could eat fresh while they worked.

Halfway through the sandwich, my cell phone rang.

“Well, we found out why your truck can’t be aligned…(I wasn’t aware that it COULDN’T be aligned)

and these vehicles are notorious for this…(I rolled my eyes because I could hear it coming)…but the upper and lower ball joints are out on the driver’s side and the passenger side. Now, normally that would be nine ninety nine but I have cut it down to nine twenty five.”

“Do you mean nine hundred and twenty five DOLLARS?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t do anything. I’m coming to get the truck.”

That has got to be the oldest con in the mechanic’s book. The old ‘bad ball joint’ scam.

Do I KNOW that they are lying…not yet…but I ain’t spendin’ 900 bucks on a truck with 160K miles on it without a second opinion!

Perhaps it is just coincidence, but this exact ‘scam’ enabled me to find our mechanic in LA. When I asked for a second opinion, the guy who became my mechanic told me that the ball joints were fine, and fixed the problem very inexpensively. He got my business for the next 19 years.

I’m paying for it

My morning run did not go too well. Well, two of the three components of running were not good! My will was so-so. My lungs were fine. However, my body it T-I-R-E-D! MY legs felt like columns of cement. (Please note that I did not say concrete. I said cement. Cement is wet)

Since I woke up late, I ran late. And since I ran late, it was hotter. At the three mile mark, I felt a heat headache starting to build. So…

I stopped…and my time wasn’t particularly inspiring. Oh well…

I will assail this mountain again on Saturday.

Why did I do that?

I stayed up working on my e-mail database until 11:00. When I went to bed, I couldn’t sleep.I went out to the living room to see what my wife was doing. I ended up watching City Slickers with her and my son on my old Apple laptop until 2:00 A.M.!

Returning Apple computer

The people at the Apple store determined that the my new laptop is defective so I have to ship it back to Apple.

Why am I surprised?

This morning, I told my wife and son that I had a present for them! I brought in the box that held my new computer so that they could have the pleasure of opening it.

They were excited to open it. I was excited when I plugged it in and turned it on.

The new computer asked if I wanted to transfer information from another computer. Keep in mind that I have been working for three days to get everything ready. The new computer took inventory of the files on my old computer and said that it would take 1 hour and 37 minutes to transfer. I thought, “That’s great!”

I checked the status after 45 minutes and it said “LESS THAN A MINUTE REMAINING.” “This is SO cool!”

I sat if front of the computer in anticipation…

Well, the first part went faster than expected. It’s allright if the last minute is slower…

An hour later, it still said “Less than a minuter remaining”…

Three hours later…

I rebooted both computers and tried again…

Same thing! #@%%$#

Tomorrow, I am going to have to take my new MacBook Pro to the Apple store!
