It’s beginning to look a lot like…

I started unpacking some boxes yesterday. I have to tell you, even though I knew what was in the box, even though it was stuff I had used many times before, it still felt a little like Christmas with each package.

Come to think of it, with the snow…maybe I just got confused!

May flowers???

It’s April 12th and it is snowing here in Kansas City! April 12th! Amazing!

It has to be global warming…

A few weeks ago, my wife was remarking to a woman in Costco, “What’s with all of this rain?”

“Well, it will rain for the next month.”

”You mean there is a rainy season after all of this snow??? In California, the rainy season is winter.”

The woman piped up, “Well, you know that April showers bring May flowers!”

My response: “And what does April snow bring?”

One further thought for her: “You know that Rose Parade that you enjoy watching in January? Guess where those roses are grown? In California…IN DECEMBER!!!

We have a saying in California: “November sunshine brings December roses!”

No rain, just as forecasted!

The trailer carrying our belongings arrived at the storage facility last night so that we could unload everything on Friday. I scheduled the truck’s arrival today because the extended forecast indicated that Friday was the only day with no rainfall expected. I thought about starting to unpack last night but the intermittent rain forced me back onto the couch.

So, I woke up this morning to get an early start. I dropped my son off at school and was unloading at 7:30 A.M.Well, so far the forecast is correct: it isn’t raining.By 7:45, my fingers were hurting! It was 31º!…and windy!

I checked my calendar. Yes, it really is April 11th.April 11th and IT MIGHT SNOW!?!? Hold on…

I sense that I might have a bad attitude developing. I need to look at this a different way. Let’s see…

I know…

If the seasons are approximately equal (91 days each) here in the heart of the country, that means that…

we are 25% through Spring AND IT IS GOING TO SNOW!?!? Our old home in Northridge is expecting temperatures in the low 60’s; you know, a NORMAL spring day.

Shoot, there’s that attitude thing happening again…

What would Pollyanna do?…

I know, I am becoming a hearty midwesterner! Back to work…

A Fine Young Man!

My children’s “punishment” was that they had to go to bed early. (We have had several late nights in a row so today’s events were a good justification to make them get more sleep.) They couldn’t really argue.

A few minutes before bedtime, my son sincerely lamented “I have to label the parts of a girls body.”

“In person?” I joked.

“No. I have a test. I don’t want to do it.”

I continued in my light mode and said, “Well, dude, that area is going to be a big source of interest for the rest of your life so you might as well go ahead and begin to get familiar with it.”

“I want to wait until then.”

I can’t tell you how impressed I am with his commitment to moral purity!

“Son, that’s fine. I respect your choice. If it hurts your grade, you have no problems with me.”

As I awoke this morning, I immediately saw how wise my son is. When we learn new information, our next response is to want to experience what we have learned. Knowledge creates its own curiousity. This is why sex education actually promotes immorality and promiscuity. We all want to know more. Thankfully, my son has a conviction that he wants to learn about this area of life with his wife.

The Beautiful Letdown, Part 9: Redemption

When I parted company with my children after picking up the Nissan, neither they nor I were feeling ‘warm fuzzies’. They were chastened and I was attempting to regain my equilibrium. I was not angry with them. But I did not feel any compunction to patch things up quickly and smooth things over nicely. It would have been insincere.  It would have been false.

As young adults, they need to see the consequences of their actions. They need to realize that their lives affect other people and this will only increase as they move into the next phase of life. This afternoon, each of them had made unintentional mistakes that affected someone else.

As I drove home from the Apple store, I mentally prepared for meeting my children. I realize that this is not their character. It is an aberration. They are still young and prone to immaturity. However, I am ALWAYS looking for “teachable moments.” They would have time to reflect on the afternoon’s events. What could I teach them today that would help them? What mark could I make?

Well, when I got home, I was actually impressed with what I said.

The Beautiful Letdown, Part 8: The Reprieve

After we picked up the Nissan, I decided that I ‘deserved’ to treat myself to something fun to make up for the aggravation that I had just endured as a ‘good parent’ so I drove to the Apple store at the Plaza.

I mean it makes sense. After all, I am in the process of justifying my desire to buy a new computer to my wife so why not slip on over to do some research since I am already kinda, sorta in the general area anyway…

For a Wednesday night at 5:40, the store was very busy. When I expressed as much to the salesman, er, excuse me, salesperson, she replied “This is dead. Come to the store on any Saturday. There is no room to move.” Apple is really hitting the right notes.

The Beautiful Letdown, Part 7: The Reckoning

The conversation inside the truck went something like this: “Sunshine, I was at this place 45 minutes ago.”

I’m sure Dodgeball was thinking, “that sounds familiar.”

“Dad, you should have called me.”

Dodgeball groaned. Steve Martin’s scene replayed inside of me for a SECOND time as I found my cell phone and handed it to her with the “Call History” displayed.

“But Dad, I checked her phone for missed calls!”

“Sunshine, I called three times. Why didn’t you just tell me what the house looked like?”

“I didn’t think of that.”

“You said that they were right next to the church.”

“They are. It’s just two streets over…”

“And then you have to head off into the Australian Outback! (I didn’t say exactly that but something to that effect) When you were deciding earlier in the day what you were going to do this afternoon, didn’t I say that I didn’t want to have to find you?”

“Yes.”

“Does this qualify?”

The Beautiful Letdown, Part 6: Sunshine Appears

At this point, I couldn’t ‘relax’ any longer. I called my daughter again…no response.

Dodgeball decided to call a friend. Perhaps he saw an opportunity. I mean after all, he wasn’t looking quite as bad now! Misery loves company and here his sister had ridden in to save his day! He emerged from the truck to inform me that we were supposed to take the two left forks.

“We already did that.”

He went back into hiding and called his friend back. “Dad, the place with the John Deere tractor in the driveway is the right place.”

Back to the house with no front door. The barking, growling dog is now roaming the driveway but the garage door is open. I decided to risk it. As I went to the gate, a little girl came out of the side of the house with a littler black dog in her hands. She acknowledged that my daughter was indeed inside and that she would get her but “could I please not let the dog out?!”

I made SURE the gate was closed and headed back toward the truck. I had my head down, trying to figure out how I was going to respond when I finally met my daughter when the little black dog suddenly burst into my field of vision at my feet!

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING OUT HERE?”

I looked back and sure enough, I HAD closed the gate! “GET BACK IN THERE!”

I scared the little black dog back under the gate back into the yard just as my daughter and her friend appeared. I plastered my best “Hi honey. I am so glad to see you” smile on my face and greeted her friend.

As I was informing them that their dog can get under the fence, the darn thing JUMPED THROUGH THE FENCE! “See, he just did it again! He went through the fence!” I mean, the dog was so small that he fit between the upright ‘pickets’ of the picket fence!

The Beautiful Letdown, Part 5: My unplanned retreat

At this point, I was a beaten man. There is only one house on this road but my daughter is evidently not there. I assumed that she had gone somewhere.

I pulled to the side of the road next to the lake to wait for her return. It occurred to me that people actually come to this very spot to refresh and relax. So, remembering Pollyanna, I walked next to the lake and tried to embark on my own personal ‘retreat’.

While I was ‘relaxing’, two Canadian geese sidled over to feed themselves near the bench that I was sitting on. As I watched these beautiful birds plucking the grass, it occurred to me that they have quite a difficult task given to them. I mean how many blades of grass does a bird of that size have to pluck in a day to get full? It have to believe that a single blade of grass is very close to being a negative calorie food for a goose. Thank God that I am a human and that I live in the United States. I don’t have to work that hard to eat.
