The Beautiful Letdown, Part 4: The House Next Door

We turned into the driveway to see a house with no apparent entrance!

Two closed garage doors greeted me with a French door to the left. However that door has no access unless I wanted to walk alongside of the house, climb onto their side (?) porch, walk back and knock on it. I didn’t like that idea. To the right was a picket fence with a gate. Perfect!

As I got to the gate, I was greeted by a growling, barking dog! Now, in my experience, people who live this far removed from civilization probably want to be left alone…and this growling dog might just be tasked with enforcing that desire! I was not going to find out. My momma didn’t raise no fool!

I decided to call my daughter. NO RESPONSE.

Since no one is responding to the growling, barking dog, I assumed that I must have chosen a wrong fork two forks back. I mean, it didn’t LOOK like they were expecting me…

Dodgeball and I received a lovely massage as we drove down the driveway (which turned out to be the left side of the third fork) over to the road that leads to the retreat center. We didn’t see a house! Back out to the right side of the first fork…no house there either! I called my daughter again…NO RESPONSE.

The Beautiful Letdown, Part 3: Offroading adventure

So Dodgeball and I drove to the house “right next to the church.”

As soon as we reached the dirt part of the road, I found myself driving on a levee with a lake on both sides.

And this road is not ‘washboard’ bumpy. It was more like “washed out” bumpy. You know, “let me drive 5 miles an hour and HOPE I don’t wreck my suspension” bumpy. VERY slowly around the lake. Aha, here is the second fork!

But this wasn’t just a fork in the road. This was a fork with a high degree of difficulty. The right road had a sign directing us to a retreat center. The left fork had a sign saying: “Authorized Vehicles Only.” She didn’t tell me about this…

I guess I can always tell whoever comes to arrest me for trespassing that my daughter authorized me to go to the left so that I could pick her up at some house that might be somewhere on this road, I THINK!*#)!

Well, wouldn’t you know it. A previously undisclosed THIRD FORK! Unbelievable! I went to the right. Around the bend I in fact saw a house! All that separated me from this house was …

a field of mud! (It has rained quite a bit here in Missouri. You know, floods…)

I drove and hoped! We made it across without getting stuck. Thank God!

The Beautiful Letdown, Part 2: Blondie’s directions

Realizing that I couldn’t change undo the dodge ball game, I refocused my attention on carrying out my plan and called my daughter to get directions to her location. This is what I heard: “Well, you make a right out of the church parking lot and then right on the second street. At the end it turns into a DIRT ROAD…and then there is a fork…and then there is another a fork…”

Rain clouds began forming very quickly in my brain. Before it got so dark that I couldn’t see anything, I asked “What am I looking for?”

“My friends house.”

Hey, that helps! I mean, I knew that I shouldn’t ask for an address on a dirt road with two forks in it. “WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? HOW WILL I KNOW THAT I AM THERE?”

“Dad, I don’t know. Just call me if you get lost. And its really bumpy”

Now, earlier in the day, when my daughter was deciding how and where she wanted to spend her afternoon, I had expressed that we had much to do and that she needed to be at a place where I could just drop in and pick her up. She had said, “I’m going to my friend’s house. They live right next to the church.”

“That sounds good. I’ll see you there.”

The Beautiful Letdown, Part 1: The Missing Brain

Ah, the joy of  parenting young adults! Their bodies and brains are still changing, growing and maturing. I had planned to pick my son up from school at 3:00, pick my daughter up from her school at 3:30 and then get the Nissan so my son could drive it home.

All was going exactly according to plan as I pulled into the school parking lot at 2:55. At 3:20, after watching nearly every child in that school leave, I texted him and asked him “Why am I still sitting in the school parking lot?” No response. At 3:35, I again texted him: “WHERE ARE YOU!?”  Again no response. Finally, at 3:45, I receive a text: “I am so sorry.” I looked up and there he was, sheepishly walking toward the truck.

“I have been waiting for 45 minutes! What were you doing?”

I was doing my best to stay calm. Perhaps he had been studying or was spending time with a teacher after class getting extra tutoring during office hours and lost track of the time. How could I be upset with that???

But then came the answer; the mind-boggling, befuddling, exasperating answer. With his head down, he quietly muttered “Dodge ball.”

Dodgeball?!?!

I felt a little like Steve Martin in the movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles after he got off the bus to pick up his nonexistent rental car in a far away parking lot at the Dallas airport in the snow! I want to bite his head off but…

I have to keep my cool because I am “the loving, understanding, mature parent” and he is the “adolescent whose brain is still forming.”

So, I said…

nothing!

Hi, I’m Sven

Man, I was Mr. Mom this morning! I woke my son up, made his lunch, took him to the grocery store to buy snacks for his class, dropped him off at school, returned home, woke my wife and daughter up, made them breakfast, and then dropped the Nissan off for repairs. As my wife and I drove home together, I remarked that I was her “Sven” today.

Who is “Sven”? “Sven” is the star of a very bad television commercial. He is a large Swedish guy that helps this family get up on time, eat healthy meals, keep track of their appointments and dress warmly.

Why do I say that he is the star of a “very bad television commercial”? Because neither I nor my wife could remember the product that “Sven” was supposed to help sell! It is a very entertaining commercial, but not very effective…at least not to us!

Mo-West

I told you of our fortuitous introduction to the Mo-West wrestling club…

Well, I learned a little more about the level of competition that my son is learning in.

There are 7 national champions of some sort in the room. There are several young men who travel internationally!

One of the fathers told me that “Someone” was watching out for me to help me find this club!

Almost like Someone knew…

Wow! Wow! Wow!

My son and I went to the apartment office to check out racquetball equipment this afternoon.

We were greeted by one of the women who worked so hard to get our application approved and processed so quickly.

“You are so lucky. You got in just in time.”

“What do you mean?”

“When I came in this morning, I had a memo from the corporate office laying on my desk. They eliminated the very provision that we used to accept your application. We could not rent to you if you applied today!”

It is almost like Someone knew that this was in the works!!!

Bruins Break Wind

Watched the Bruins get handled by Memphis in the NCAA tournament with some KU fans. Now I can’t wear my UCLA windbreaker with quite as much pride now.

A nice coincidence

Talk about a nice coincidence. Everyone has off today! Both of my children are off from each of their schools and my wife doesn’t have to work. And I am currently unemployed. So, we all slept in and had a nice, restful day.

Moving again!

We moved in today. Seems like I have done this before. Just recently actually!!!

Yesterday, I STARTED looking for an apartment at about 1:00 P.M.

All of the documentation was completed and got processed minutes before the apartment complex office closed at 6:00 P.M.

This morning, I was declared innocent of all criminal charges by the Federal Government’s computers, and we signed the lease!
